This
holiday was the perfect mix of relaxation and fishing - the
only word I can use to describe Van Ghat is “amazing”.
We started out trip at old Delhi’s busy train station, and
six hours later we were magically transported to the Corbett
National Park.
We had only planned 4 days of fishing, so I had to be on my
guard if I was to catch the fish of my dreams, and
accomplish my aim of landing a big golden Mahseer in such a
small space of time.

We
arrived at the lovely camp to a warm welcome from the staff
and camp manager Govinda, who spoke good English so
communication wasn’t a problem. The ground where the lodge
is situated is breathtaking and has been managed perfectly
to give the feel of a totally hidden and isolated place. The
lodge was beautifully decorated with local natural materials
and the communal area was a lovely open sided room from
where you could sit and eat the amazing food we were served,
and watch the mass of wildlife right in front of your eyes.

Our
room was very comfortable with a low roof to keep the sun
off in the day and open sided windows to allow the cool
breeze to circulate in the evening. We also had a private
terrace from where we could sit and relax in the heat of the
day and enjoy a cold beer from the fully stocked bar. The
view from our terrace was one I will never forget and the
sunsets were truly breathtaking.

The
fishing was fantastic and we fully looked after by our
gillie who advised us on where and how to fish which meant I
caught 11 fish over 4 days, and even managed one on my first
cast! The biggest fish weighed 30lb and put up a brilliant
fight on light tackle.
Ellie managed to catch 4 fish, the biggest being 15lb, and
seeing her face that day, for me, was priceless, and we both
can’t wait until next year to do it all again!
For
us, this trip gave us the best of both worlds…amazing
fishing as well as comfortable facilities, good food and the
chance to spot the local wildlife, which meant I could share
this with my girlfriend and that is something I will
remember forever……
